Upgrading access doors for Trafford Town Hall to meet the requirements of the Equality Act

At ABC, we’re often approached by councils to help improve, maintain or repair door assets in government owned buildings. Last year, ABC engineers completed several works at Trafford Town Hall in Stretford. Trafford Council were looking for a company that could help them achieve EA (Equality Act) compliance by updating the doors already in situ at the town hall.

ABC is competent when it comes to compliance…

Considered management of assets in offices, public & local authority buildings is key to keeping workplaces and public spaces compliant when it comes to safety, security and access. ABC has experience in what is required to meet the regulations involved with achieving EA compliance. The Equality Act was established to end discrimination and cultivate inclusivity through equal access rights for all.

The Equality Act 2010 sets out that any new building or alterations to an existing building, to satisfy obligations under the Equality Act, must comply (in England & Wales) with The Building Regulations 2010. In particular, the Approved Document part ‘M’ (England & Wales) or Section 4.2 of The Technical Handbook (Scotland).

EA Compliance at Trafford Town Hall

The work…

ABC engineers had a multifaceted task when it came to Trafford Town Hall. The work began with pre-fit site survey walk-arounds to identify the update requirements, mounting plates and any trunking work for cabling.

Retrofitted automation was required to be installed on a large number of single and double swing doors across multiple floors to meet regulations. Fob keys were provided to staff to manage access. Alongside automating doors, safety sensors, finger trap guards, magnetic locks and touchless exit technology was required. Attention was also given to the accessible toilets that needed WC accessory kits installing.

Health and safety is paramount…

All ABC engineers undergo regular health and safety training to ensure procedures are kept up to date. This is particularly important when it comes to working in public spaces where installs need to be carefully managed to minimise risk. 100% job specific risk assessments are undertaken upon commencement of any work, providing clear action on how they are to be mitigated. We have processes in place to ensure safe working, helping to mitigate risk.

And the support doesn’t end after installation…

ABC Doors offers the total door support package – planned preventative service and maintenance packages and a 24/7 emergency repairs service.
