Different Types of Automatic Doors

Swinging Automatic Doors

Swinging automatic doors are one of the most common types to see out and about in shops, banks, offices, and hospitals. Swinging automatic doors function – as the name suggests – by ‘swinging’ the door 90 degrees to allow people through the doorway. These doors often have an area on the floor marked out with rubber matting or a coloured square to denote the area that needs to be kept clear to allow the doors to function properly.

Sliding Automatic Doors

Sliding automatic doors can be used when there is plenty of space either side of the doorway – such as on the fronts of businesses or banks. Sliding automatic doors slide the door panels out of the way rather than swinging them to the side. Sliding doors come with the benefit of allowing a full open area either side of the door instead of needing a ‘keep clear’ area to allow the door to open. However, this type of automatic door is not suitable for small entrances and passageways.

Folding Automatic Doors

Folding doors are the best options for tight spaces and narrow corridors. Folding automatic doors work by breaking the door panels up into two or more sections which can fold back on themselves. This allows the door to open by letting it collapse in on itself, folding neatly to the side. As it neither needs to slide fully to the side nor swing fully outwards, the folding door requires the least amount of room to operate.

Rotating Automatic Doors

Rotating automatic doors tend to come in two varieties: those with non-stop operation and those that stop and start based on sensors detecting when people enter the doorway. These circular behemoths can be found on the front of many large businesses and commercial centres, allowing people to enter and exit simultaneously by walking through the rotating entranceway. Rotating automatic doors require the most space to install, and are the most expensive option, but do offer some unique benefits. Rotating doors help boost the building’s insultation and energy efficiency, cutting carbon emissions and slashing energy bills! There are many types of automatic doors on the market today, each with their own advantages and disadvantages, depending on the conditions of your site!
